The new bespoke weatherproofing infrastructure, including parasols, awnings, windbreaks, heaters, festoon lighting and purpose-built planters, are to be installed at Princes Street, Caroline Street, Pembroke St, Beasley Street and Union Quay by the end of November.
Following the initial success of the Princes Street pilot programme in the summer of 2020, and the subsequent installation and creation of “Eat in the Street” in the summer of this year, Meitheal Architects has worked closely with Cork City Council, and the traders of Beasley Street, Pembroke Street and Union Quay to continue to evolve the look and feel of our streets.
The infrastructure is designed to last for a minimum of five years with some of the bespoke infrastructure is being locally fabricated by Cork based businesses. Under the announced funding, the following work shall be carried out;
Pembroke Street: Installation of awnings, parasols, and festoon lighting.
Princes Street: Installation of heaters and lighting to the 17 parasols already placed on the street.
Beasley Street: Installation of larger awnings, festoon lighting along the centre of the street, giant umbrellas and parasols and resurfacing of the street parallel to the original cobblestone pathway.
Union Quay: Installation of 16 parasols similar to those on Princes Street. Each premises is to have a unique colour parasol and windbreaker. Festoon lighting above the parasols. in addition to improved pedestrian access which is inclusive of wheelchair access alongside an improved resurfaced road surface.
