This house re-imagined a stone ruin on the Atlantic Coast into a vibrant, distinctly modern house for a client with a clear vision. Combining contextual elements and the stunning landscape into an energy efficient house was the brief for this conservation project. Careful reconstruction, conservation and stabilisation of the existing ruins, allowed their integration into the main house as well as providing a beautiful contextual outside terrace providing shelter to the Atlantic elements.

This refurbishment and extension to an NIAH listed terrace house started with the careful refurbishment and conservation of the external brick façade and beautiful internal elements. A modern extension that integrates the character of the original brick with a new textural extension.

Project InfoWe understand that a home is a major undertaking for any client, a space that is a true expression of an individual’s or family’s needs, lifestyle and circumstances.
Our approach is site-specific and bespoke.
We offer a full home procurement service, from inception to handover, and work with a team of preferred, specialist, residential contractors. Quality of execution is paramount and successful management of the process and forensic attention to detail are trademarks of our approach. We are very proud of the reputation we have grown with council planning departments and we have been selected to be cited as a best practice example in the “Good Practice Guideline” documents published by many local authorities.

This rural family home is set in the fertile lowlands of the Laune Valley in Mid Kerry. The house references the oxide corrugated roofs and wet dash render of the former tenant cottages that predominate in the area. Projecting walls shelter an entrance courtyard from the prevailing south westerly’s from Dingle Bay, which also serve to form a protected courtyard that frames views of Carrantuohill Mountain. The busy clients required a maintenance free home, and the materials chosen reflect this aspiration, through the use of polished concrete internally and externally, powder coated aluminum, steel and natural lime pigmented wet dash render.

Our clients have lived on this site for three decades. The locals, at the time, thought they were mad to want to live there. “The dentist’s bought the bog” they all said. But our clients saw the potential in this beautiful expanse of southwesterly coastline. It is a great gift to live by the sea. In building a replacement dwelling on the site, they were religiously concerned with harvesting all of the site’s natural merits, previously ignored. The brief was not a series of rooms or a schedule of accommodation. The brief was a wish list of moments to be captured, described by clients who understood the site, the quality of light, the brightness of night, the elements, the seasons and the simple joy of an unimpeded vista. This house is borne of their brief, which as John McGahern was fond of saying is the amalgam of “the weather of their lives”
