Cork ARC Cancer Support House

Project overview

Meitheal Architects completed the refurbishment of a heritage building which now hosts the Cork ARC Cancer Support Headquarters, a community cancer support centre.

This project rejuvenated the traditional façade of the original structure and brought the building up to current energy standards and building regulations, prioritising an anti-institutional feel and the comfort of the residents. The result is a transformative environment that blends welcome and homely surroundings with state of the art services and elements to form a flexible, comfortable, caring and acoustically appropriate ambiance

The thoughtfully designed interiors, including the lobby, welcome room, treatment and counselling rooms, and teenage room, have been created to accommodate all patients and visitors. The special consideration of colour palettes and the acoustic treatment of these spaces carefully reinforces the calm atmosphere, while providing individual seating areas for groups. The delivery of service remained at the forefront of the design process, creating an accessible environment that supports the work of the ARC team.
The centre is now providing services in full, in use as it was designed and intended.

Meitheal's work on the Cork ARC Cancer Support House was shortlisted for the Fit Out Project of the Year and Healthcare Project of the Year categories at the 2022 Irish Building & Design Awards.
