St. Patrick’s Bridge

Project overview

Meitheal Architects were commissioned by Cork City Council to plan and design architectural lighting for the restoration of St. Patrick’s Bridge, connecting St. Patrick’s Hill with Cork City Centre. The original structure was built in 1861, the masonry arch, 3-span bridge comprising 90m in length. The bridge is a notable landmark in the city, meaning a sensitive, context-informed design was key to ensure that the lighting solution complemented the heritage elements and seamlessly integrated into the city nightscape.

In collaboration with conservation architects, JCA Architects and Kevin Cleary, we brought the bridge back to it’s former splendour, while adapting it to the needs of modern life. St. Patrick’s Bridge won the major award at the 2019 Cork’s Best Building Awards.
